Downloading public Instagram content is easy — there are dozens of online tools for it. But the moment you want to save something from a private account you follow (a friend's Reel, a private community's archive, your own posts you forgot to back up), those tools fail. They can only see what's publicly indexed.
SSvid solves this with an in-app browser: you log into your own Instagram account inside SSvid (just like you would in Chrome), and then any content visible to your logged-in session becomes downloadable. No third-party logins, no password sharing, no bypassing privacy.
How It Works (The Honest Version)
This approach is important to understand because it's both more powerful and more respectful of privacy than what most tools claim to do:
- SSvid does not bypass privacy. It cannot download from accounts you don't follow. It cannot break into private accounts.
- SSvid uses your own session. You log in via SSvid's built-in browser. Instagram sees the same authenticated session it would see in Safari or Chrome.
- SSvid never sees your password. The login happens in a sandboxed WebView. SSvid only reads cookies for the active Instagram session, locally on your machine.
- If you can see it, you can save it. Anything visible to your logged-in account — your feed, accounts you follow, your own profile, Stories — is downloadable.
This is the same approach yt-dlp uses for YouTube subscriptions, Reddit private subs, and Twitter restricted content. It's the cleanest way to handle authentication without compromising security.
Step-by-Step Guide
Install SSvid
Download SSvid free for macOS, Windows, or Linux. Takes 30 seconds. No SSvid account required.
Open SSvid's in-app browser
Click the Browser tab in SSvid's sidebar. This opens an integrated WebView. Navigate to instagram.com.
Log in to your Instagram account
Sign in normally with your Instagram username and password. The login happens entirely inside the WebView — SSvid never reads your credentials, only the resulting session cookie. Two-factor auth works the same as a normal browser.
Navigate to the content you want to save
Browse Instagram normally. Visit a friend's profile, open a Reel, scroll through Stories. Anything you can see, SSvid can save. When you're on a post or Reel, click the Download button in the SSvid toolbar.
Choose format and download
For videos, pick MP4 (HD quality). For carousels, SSvid grabs all images at once. For Stories, you can download the entire 24-hour Story sequence. Files save to your downloads folder, organized by username.
Pro tip: You can also paste an Instagram URL (post, Reel, profile) directly into SSvid's main search bar without opening the browser — but only if it's a public account or you're already logged in via the in-app browser.
What You Can Download
- Reels — single videos in original HD quality
- Posts — single image, single video, or carousels (SSvid grabs all items in one go)
- Stories — current 24-hour Stories from any account you follow
- Highlights — saved Story collections
- IGTV / long videos — full length, original quality
- Profile pictures — full resolution (Instagram's API only shows thumbnail in browser)
- Your own archive — bulk download all your own posts, including ones you've forgotten about
What You Cannot Download
To set realistic expectations:
- Posts from private accounts you don't follow — privacy is privacy.
- Deleted posts — once Instagram deletes a post, the file is gone from their servers.
- Stories that have already expired — unless saved to Highlights, expired Stories are not retrievable.
- Live streams in progress — recording Instagram Lives requires a screen recorder, not a downloader.
- DM media — direct messages are end-to-end encrypted; SSvid can't access them.
Is This Safe? Will Instagram Ban Me?
SSvid retrieves the same media files Instagram already serves to your browser when you view a post. From Instagram's perspective, there's no difference between viewing a Reel and saving its file — the file is already loaded. There's no special "download API" call for Instagram to track and ban.
That said, common sense applies:
- Don't bulk-download thousands of posts in 5 minutes. Any unusual traffic pattern (logged-in or not) can trigger Instagram's anti-spam detection. SSvid's parallel downloads are throttled to look like normal browsing.
- Don't share downloaded private content. Friends trust you with their private posts. Saving for personal reference is one thing; reposting publicly is a betrayal of trust (and possibly illegal).
- Use a secondary account if paranoid. If you're worried about anything, log into SSvid with a secondary Instagram account that follows your main one.
In months of testing, no SSvid users have reported account restrictions from normal use. The only cases we've seen involve users trying to scrape entire profiles of strangers — which we don't support and which is against Instagram's TOS regardless of what tool you use.
Legal & Ethical Notes
Downloading content for personal offline viewing is generally legal. However, content on Instagram is the intellectual property of the original creator. When you download from a private account, the creator shared that content under an expectation of limited audience.
Things you should NEVER do with downloaded private Instagram content:
- Re-share publicly without permission.
- Use commercially in ads, products, or monetized content.
- Distribute to people who weren't originally allowed to see it.
- Use to harass, blackmail, or expose anyone.
SSvid is a tool for personal archiving and convenience. It is not a tool for stalking, harassment, or copyright infringement. Use it responsibly.
